Success!
Isaac had his 5th set of tubes put in on Tuesday morning. I was worried it wouldn't happen when he came down with a fever on Monday night. They told me to bring him in the next morning and they would evaluate him before the surgery. He tossed and turned all night (in bed with us, unfortunately) and asked for a drink nearly every hour from 3am on. (Nothing to eat or drink after midnight they told me). I caved a little bit and got a syringe and gave him 1 or 2 mils of water each time. I figured not much was making it into his tummy so he would be okay.
He was dying of thirst by the time we got to the hospital and begging for water. Dr. Heras even bumped him up in line so he didn't have to wait. She was so nice, she got him a wet sponge and sponged his lips and tongue. He didn't throw a fit, he just looked miserable and sad. She took pity on him. Turns out the fever was just from another ear infection so they let him do the surgery. He was a champ! Never cried, never panicked, never even resisted. He just laid in bed while they wheeled him down the hall. The next time I saw him he was out cold from the anesthesia looking so peaceful.
He eventually woke up and just sat on my lap and drank his water for 20 minutes. He didn't even cry a single tear. It must be easier when they're older because the first 3 times it was pretty horrific coming out of the anesthesia. Last time wasn't too bad, just a little whiny and this time he was just fine!
I took him out for breakfast at McDonalds afterwards and he downed 3 pancakes and a hash brown. That is a TON of food for Isaac. Then we headed home and he slept for 2 hours (also very unusual for Isaac, especially at 10am). After he woke up, he was back to normal. Running around with endless energy and off to play with Jakey.
He's been hearing much better and feeling much better. Let's hope they can stay in until May! I love having my Isaac back!

I love that kid. So glad the tubes are helping. I've often wondered how he perceives the world. I can't imagine how frustrating it is to be in pain and not be able to hear. He does amazingly well - better than I would. Hugs to him.
ReplyDeleteSo glad that maybe he can find some relief!
ReplyDeleteWhat a trooper...We had Dr Heras put in Hannah's tubes this time last year. So much better when they're not in pain. I'm glad it was a success!
