Day 9

This morning we got up bright and early (6:30am) to head to Looe Key for a snorkeling trip out to the coral reef (about 6 miles offshore). I knew that with the weather we've been having, there was a chance they would have to cancel but we really wanted to go see the reef so we booked it anyway. We were on the road about 1/2 hour into our 1 hr 45 min drive when they finally opened and I was able to call and see if we were still on for the trip. But it was bad news. The trip was cancelled. We were bummed. They said it was just too windy and there were 3 foot swells out on the reef - just not safe for snorkeling. So we had to shift gears and go to plan B. There really was no plan B. Plus it's the 4th of July and our options were a little limited.

It was a beautiful (but windy) day on Key Largo this morning so we headed back and decided to spend the morning at the house with a chance to maybe do the afternoon snorkel trip. We swam, Kira started a sand castle, and the kids played in the yard. They tried to sneak in the house to watch TV or play electronics. Mikey eventually won Jeff out and got to watch TV. I made the other kids stay outside and play! (Such a mean mom). :) We made hoagie sandwiches for lunch and got dried off so we could head to Tavernier and see Monsters University at the theater.

The movie was good. Jeff curled up against the wall and fell asleep for a good chunk of the middle of the movie but the rest of us enjoyed it. Secretly I was jealous of his little cat nap but I had Mikey on my lap and he was pretty cute and snuggly, especially at the scary parts.

We were slightly tempted to do a double feature and watch Despicable Me right after but it was in 3D so it was more expensive and I just couldn't spend the money on it. So we headed back to the house for some more beach and pool time. We played volleyball, practiced headers, swam laps, played games and had races in the pool. The weather was perfect. Nana sat it the shade and watched her grandkids and Jason play. Jeff BBQ'd chicken for dinner and we made corn on the cob and salad. It was an awesome meal.

After dinner the kids were content back in the pool and Nana was watching so Jeff and I stole an opportunity to kayak over to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park around the corner from the house. It was pretty awesome to launch kayaks right from the beach in front of the house and kayak over through the ocean among the mangroves. We kayaked over to where we saw the manatees the other day and down into a little channel inside the park. It was beautiful and fun.

When we got back the sun was close to setting so we got things ready for our campfire and fireworks. Just as we had everything ready to start the fire we felt raindrops. We saw a storm coming so we figured we should wait a few minutes. So we lit some fireworks while we watched the clouds roll in. We had only lit off 3 or 4 when the torrential downpour and thunder and lightning were socked in right over us. It was a mad dash to gather everything and run in the house soaking wet within minutes. Crazy! We watched the thunder and lightning and the downpour while we made our s'mores in the microwave and the kids watched Phineas and Ferb.

For our devotional tonight we watched this Mormon Message about seeking answers and going directly to the source for our answers. Then the kids begged to watch the Spiritual Crocodiles video again. I think that is a lesson they will never forget!

A GIANT shrimp on US-1. We had to stop and take a picture!

Our yummy 4th of July dinner thanks to Nana and Jeff!

What a perfect evening!

Fireworks on the beach before the storm. It doesn't get much better than this for the 4th of July!

Playing at the beach.

Jason snorkeling out in front of the house. Not much to see but sea grass.

On your mark, get set, GO!

Sometimes Isaac is just content to play all by himself. Today he sat and sorted rocks in the yard for a good half an hour. It was pretty adorable. Love this kid!

Calvin has always been able (and willing) to catch ANYTHING that moves! I can't even count how many lizards and insects he's caught on this trip. Today he found a few lizards and a gecko!

Mikey's stuffed manatee "Carl" had a ripped seam. So grateful that Nana had a little sewing kit to sew him up.

Ooey, gooey microwave s'mores!
