Deer Valley Date
I wanted to give Jeff an "experience" gift for Christmas just like we give the kids. We don't usually do much for each other for Christmas but he always comes up with thoughtful things for me and I wanted to do something thoughtful for him so I planned an overnight "date" in Park City. I arranged for Ivy to babysit the kids and we used our free lift tickets to Deer Valley. We stayed at the Chateux at Deer Valley. It was a pretty fancy place. But we are not fancy people so sometimes we feel a little out of place. But it was still so fun!
The skiing wasn't great. I always love skiing with Jeff, but the snow wasn't very good. There had been a HUGE storm the day before with wind gusts over 80 mph. There were at least 50 trees blown over and there was debris all over the mountain. They had closed the mountain at 10:30am. Some of the skiers had been stuck in lodges on the mountain for 5 or 6 hours until they were escorted down the mountain in groups with the ski patrol. Most of Park City had been without power for most of the day. I was glad we were a day later! I was hoping the storm had brought some good snow but there was only a few inches of powder on top of ice, crusty snow. But we still had a great time exploring the vast expanse of Deer Valley. That place is enormous! They have 18 lifts and 3 different mountains. Not to sound ungrateful for the fun experience and the amazing and beautiful amenities and lodges of Deer Valley, but I still think the skiing in the Cottonwood Canyons is better. I love the smaller, more intimate and secluded feel of Brighton. There are so many trees and the runs wind around all over the mountain. I like feeling almost like I'm hiking and exploring amongst the trees rather than skiing on a steep, open, tree-less slope. I love the beauty of the granite rock faces and the variety of the terrain at Alta and Brighton.
The concierge suggested all of these fancy restaurants for dinner. We looked at the menu prices and the pictures online and it was $$$ for little plates. We opted for a cafe nearby and had a delicious dinner for MUCH less $$!

"Thrifty" Ice cream. So nostalgic for Jeff. He and all the neighborhood kids used to pile in the back of his Dad's Datsun and drive to the Thrifty for 25 cent ice cream cones!
Running out in the FREEZING cold night to the outdoor hot tub in our robes.
