Costa Rica Day 5: Los Aires Jungle Lodge and Waterfall Hikes
After a restless night we woke up to birds and cicadas outside. The kids slept great and were ready to go at....yes, you guessed it...5:30am! I'm starting to get a little tired with these early mornings and restless nights!
We decided to stay all day on the property since it's a crazy 4x4 LOW drive out. One problem...we have no food. Well, we still have one box of macaroni and cheese, a pineapple, some leftover nachos from last night and a bunch of snacks. They do offer meals so we asked the caretaker if they could provide meals. She said they had enough food to make us chicken quesadillas for lunch (at $8 each)! but not enough food or time to get it to make us dinner. We figured we could make it work and decided to hang out here for the day.
They have a giant outdoor chess board so everyone played tons of chess. Isaac beat everyone. He is really good! We spotted tons of toucans in the trees right around the house and the kids were tormented by the bees. Lots of screaming about bees today!
This morning we hiked 30 minutes down to a beautiful little waterfall, explored around, got bit by fire ants and climbed all over the slippery rocks. We found an old, overgrown staircase along the jungle cliff wall and we felt like we were in an Indiana Jones movie. It was crazy! We continued down to the river and explored up and down the river, finding waterslides, swimming holes and having a good ol' time! It was awesome. We had a few slips and falls but no real injuries. It was so fun and so HOT!
After lunch we relaxed in the pool and swam and swam and swam. It was the only way to stay cool.
Isaac was dying to play soccer on the field we saw on the way in. (It was crazy....there are very few houses out here but there is a full size soccer field with goals. The grass was just weeds and there was horse poop (wet and dry) along the edges, but it was still a flat, huge soccer field). Isaac, Calvin, Jeff and I drove a km UP the steep dirt road to the soccer field and played soccer in the burning hot sun for nearly an hour. It was actually really, really fun! Every local who drove by honked and waved at us. I played barefoot and ended up with a few cuts and scrapes on my feet but it was so fun!
We explored another little hike and river on the other side of the property and then came home and scrounged together our dinner of pineapple and mac and cheese. I felt like Alexandria Rover on Nim's Island where she packs her suitcase full of Progresso soup for her trip because she's totally OCD. Here we are in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle, pulling a box of Kraft Mac & Cheese out of our suitcase for dinner. But the kids ate every bite!
And here it is 6:30 again and I am totally ready for bed. The kids are getting in their PJs and ready to watch a movie in the "movie room." (The only air conditioned room in the hotel).

ReplyDeleteRemember that whole swimsuit rule that Jeff has for vacation? I'm thinking he has something there. That tropical weather looks amazing. We miss you and hope you are having the time of your lives. Hugs to you all.
