Memorial Day at Target

This morning I went to Target with Isaac. Just Isaac. I love one-on-one time with him. When we were ready to check out at the register he started visiting with the cashier. I swear, he is so JEFF sometimes! (I love it). He starts telling her his name is Isaac, asking her what her name was. He told her that he was my son. "What's your son's name?" he asked. "Bruce," she said. Then they chatted another minute and she said "Your mom's lucky because she has her son here." I was thinking she meant that her son was grown because she was an older lady. "My son died," she said. Isaac said "Oh. Why did your son die?" (I'm worrying that he's getting a little nosy at this point). She told Isaac that he had been really sick and that he had died 8 years ago. She seemed a little sad and probably a little emotional with Memorial Day. She told us how she had been to put flowers on his grave. Then Isaac, with his shy, sweet smile said, "You miss your son but now you're here helping people at this store?" He said it so sweetly and genuinely like she was really doing a service by helping us check out at Target. And he sincerely meant it. She stopped. Looked at Isaac. And smiled. A real smile. I think she was genuinely touched for a moment. She opened her drawer and pulled out a sticker for Isaac and said, "Yes, I'm helping people at this store and giving nice boys stickers." Isaac smiled his shy smile again, said thank you. As we walked away he yelled "THANK YOU!!!" back at her. She smiled and told him to be a good helper for his mommy. I think Isaac has a way to just melt your heart when he wants to. He genuinely cares about people. I love that.
