Easter

Yesterday was Easter Sunday. I forgot to buy Easter baskets and candy until Saturday so I was left to pick through the leftovers at Walmart. The only baskets they had left were $5. I was not about to drop $25 on hokey baskets I'd never use again so this year I skipped baskets and just used tupperware and plastic bowls from the cupboard. The kids didn't even notice. All they noticed (at 6:30am by the way) was the little collection of goodies. I also skipped any sort of toy or present in the Easter basket. They didn't notice that either. I did however get each of them a box of cereal, a serious score right now since we are on a grocery "fast" until we move. (We're trying to use up the pantry and freezer before we move so we're really only allowed to buy 6 things right now: milk, eggs, cheese, bread, fruits and vegetables. Then we're going to donate the money we saved to the humanitarian fund). Looks like I'm good to go next year. Maybe all I need to do is throw some chocolate chips in a baggie with their name on it and they'll be happy Easter morning. Do I dare try it?

We had a great family gathering at Grandma and Grandpa Davis's. Linda and Steve and their family were there along with us, Grandma and Grandpa and Rachel and Eric Davis. It took a few minutes to warm up but Mikey decided that Eric was his new best buddy and he pretty much followed him around all afternoon. We had a delicious dinner and then Grandma taught an Easter lesson to the grandkids while the aunts and uncles (except me) hid the eggs. I was so glad to have another reminder to the kids about the true meaning of Easter. Grandma spilled the beans about the Easter bunny not being real. The cousins were a little concerned that Kate might be upset, but we don't make too big of a deal about the Easter bunny so she was no worse for the wear. Besides, she had already asked me the night before: "Mom... are you and Dad are the Easter bunny?" I said "um...yeah." Kate: "MOM! You're not supposed to say that or else he won't come!" But since she had come with me to Walmart to buy the goods, she put two and two together pretty easily on Easter morning. I just gave her a little wink and she smiled, happy with her candy regardless if it came from a bunny or not.

Tonight Calvin had a soccer game. He did great. He and Scotty scored the only two goals for their team. I love that they can play on the same team. They are such good friends. It makes me want to cry when I think they only have 2 months left of being next door neighbors. Sounds a bit melodramatic, but seriously tears will be shed for sure. I'm still just in denial. :) Calvin said tonight "I think when we move I'm going to forget that Scott's not across the street and I'll say 'bye Mom I'm going to Scott's' and then I'll go out the front door and then remember." He was kind of laughing thinking that would be funny to forget something like that, but it's so second nature to him, I know it's going to be so hard for him. And me. I will miss having Elena and their family so close. Seeing them come and go. Constantly borrowing groceries. Helping watch kids. Running. I think we're kind of hoping they might move with us. One can wish, right?

  1. You made me almost cry. And not because I depend on you for my grocery stash. I can't imagine not living by you. Really, it's beyond my comprehension. I think I'm in for a really rude awakening in June.
