Kauai Day Two - Wailua Kayak Adventure
This morning we were up at 5:30am to get to Kapaa by 7am for our Wailua Kayak Adventure. We showed up with 1 man, 2 women, 9 kids. From Utah. Didn't look good. (Tom and Avery stayed home because they weren't feeling well). We were asked in indirect and direct ways what exactly our relation was. To the kids: "So.... are you guys brothers....or cousins?" To the adults: "So what is your relation to each other?" I'm sure the owners and guide were curious!
We kayaked up the Wailua river to the trail to Secret Falls. The kayak was about 45 minutes of paddling at a pretty decent pace. The river didn't have a strong current and it was wide and the scenery was beautiful. We hiked about 45 minutes through the mud to Secret Falls. Tons of mud! We mucked through calf mud bogs and slipped and slid our way along the river and up through the trees. When we got to the waterfall, we rinsed off and swam. It was beautiful! We all did the "Hawaiian tradition" (not sure if that is made up or not) of walking behind the waterfall and making a wish in the middle. After a half hour swim we hiked back through the mud. Mikey had about 15 minutes of a meltdown while we were hiking back. He was cold and didn't want to get muddy again. After a little power snack of pistachios and a nice comment from some oncoming hikers about what a tough kid he was back in the game and hiked like a champ the rest of the way. Of course we couldn't make it all the way back without having a mud fight! Jeff was a cruel competitor and had no mercy even on the womenfolk but the kids got him pretty good too so I can't complain! We washed off in the muddy river and hopped back in our kayaks to paddle back to the marina for 45 minutes against the wind. We all were pretty sore and tired by the end! But the kids all did great! We were filthy and exhausted but made a quick stop at the Walmart for boogie boards and oxiclean then home to relax for an hour or so. Isaac is the energizer bunny and wants to go, go, go! He hated waiting around for an hour to go to the beach.
We headed back to Hanalei Beach this afternoon to try out the new boogie boards. Jeff, Tom and Ben went out to the bigger waves to bodysurf. They were huge today! I was a little nervous for them out there. The rest of us stayed in on the closer break and had a great time boogie boarding. It was awesome!
The kids had mac and cheese and then had a late night with the Tillmans while we went out to Hanalei with Tom and Elena for dinner. We ended up eating pizza at Hanalei Pizza and wandering around the Big Save to see if there were any cheaper prices on groceries. Not really—we got a $6 pineapple! So much for cheap, local produce!

Calvin got stung by a bee right as we were parking the kayaks on the rocks to start hiking. Fortunately the frog helped distract him for a minute while Elena found her afterbite stuff to help him with the pain.
